This is a GUY X GUY series. Don't bother with this series
if you don't like yaoi!
There is a rumor around school about Houjyou Aika giving birth to a child at the age of fifteen, just now returning to school about a year later. Reality is far worse than the gossip. Aika was raped by the demon ruler (Suruga) and she somehow survived long enough to give birth to a boy. The half-demon was taken to the 'real world' (aka demon world) by his father and imprisoned in the "Cliff of Time". During his time there, Kai was a plaything to his elder brother, Kaiga.
Sixteen years passed in the 'real world' until Kai manages to escape with the help of a mysterious member of the black clan. Kai immediately goes to the human world to fulfill his wish -- to meet his mother. Only one year has passed on Earth, thus Aika and Kai are the same age, enabling Kai to enroll in her school to watch over her. After her experience with Suruga, Aika's personality is a bit warped to the paranoid side, but after Kai helps to kill a demon that was after her, she becomes friendly to the boy she doesn't realize is her son.
In addition to his 'family problems', Kai's body requires a certain medicine that only the drug maker Hisanagi can create. Initially, Hisanagi followed Kaiga's commands of keeping the half-demon in a state useful to the elder brother. But with Kai free in the human world and his own feelings for the boy, Hisanagi disobeys his orders to retrieve Kai and even gives him the drugs his body needs. Mind you, he doesn't simply hand Kai the medicine. Also, to get the information he needed to find his mother, Kai gave his heart to an alchemist, and the artificial heart doesn't perform normally in the human world.
There is a perfect description of this series from another review on it: "reading this series has the same guilty yet addictive quality as watching a particularly gruesome car crash." This is a serious series with rather violent, bloody scenes. For instances in one scene, Kaiga is talking to his father while licking an eyeball of Suruga's recently dead plaything. The demons have no morals, seeing the human world as a big playground and sex with anyone is just fine. The only mistake Kai made in his life was existing, and he is constantly punished for it. This is certainly not a series for people wanting a lovey-dovey couple in a sakura covered park or for those expecting something like the comedy in Dragon Knights. But if you've been looking for a dark, convoluted series with great artwork to read, Lumen Lunae would be a good choice.
Rating -- 6.5
Yaoi Rating -- 3 -- There really isn't graphic sex, but most of it is nonconsensual and brutal. Poor Kai.
